United by a
shared passion for the timeless energy of hard bop, this international
ensemble blends tradition with modern flair, paying homage to one of
jazz
’
s most influential figures while carving out a distinctive sound of its
own.
Since its formation in April 2025, Art of the Messengers has quickly
established a strong presence on the Rotterdam jazz scene, earning
recognition for its high-energy performances and authentic yet forward-
looking approach. In the summer of 2025, the band embarked on a short
but impactful tour in Cyprus, further expanding its reach and audience.
With 2026 on the horizon, the quintet is set for exciting new opportunities
and continued growth.
The quintet’
s rhythm and soul are driven by Johnny Agisilaou on drums,
whose dynamic style reflects Art Blakey
’
s profound influence. A native of
Limassol, Cyprus, Johnny studied at Codarts and completed his master
’
s
degree at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, establishing himself as a
formidable presence on the European jazz scene.
On piano is Daniel Bulatkin, a Prague-born rising star on the Dutch and
European jazz landscape. His experience performing with leading jazz
musicians has shaped a versatile and sophisticated sound, seamlessly
balancing tradition with contemporary sensibilities.
Jurriaan De Kok, based in Rotterdam, anchors the band on bass with a
deep, resonant tone and impeccable timing. A key figure in the Dutch jazz
scene, he tours extensively with projects such as the Sunrise Trio, making
him a highly sought-after collaborator.
The frontline features Paolo Petrecca on trumpet and Marios
Charalampous on tenor saxophone. Paolo, a graduate of the
Conservatorium van Amsterdam, is deeply involved in some of the most
innovative and forward-thinking jazz projects in the Netherlands and
Italy, bringing a modern, adventurous edge to the ensemble
’
s sound.
Marios, an influential voice in the Dutch saxophone scene, has performed
his original compositions with the prestigious Jazz Orchestra of the
Concertgebouw, showcasing his bold identity as both a composer and
performer.
Drawing from the diverse backgrounds of its members, Art of the
Messengers creates a powerful dialogue between hard bop tradition and
modern jazz expression. Whether interpreting iconic Jazz Messengers
repertoire or presenting inspired original arrangements, the quintet
